Hello, my name is Adam Taub and in 2009 I completed "The Duke of Bachata," a documentary film about Dominican musician Joan Soriano.  In the process of showing the film around the country, I met many wonderful people who are passionate about  bachata music, dance and independent film. Bachata grew up in the Dominican Republic and is now being danced and enjoyed by people all over the world!

The Vision

As people’s awareness of this music increases, the time is ripe to tell the story of the artists who created it and to explore the cultural and social climate from which this music/dance form emerged.  As many of you know, bachata originated in the countryside and poor urban neighborhoods of the DR.  Bachata was looked down upon for many years. Many of the outstanding musicians who created the form have never received the recognition they deserve.

Because of these needs and my own love for the music and people, I am beginning to work on another feature documentary project with the working title "Legends of Bachata." This film will focus on some of the great musicians who were instrumental in shaping bachata, such as master guitarist Edilio Paredes and singer Ramon Cordero.

It is my hope that this film will give these great musicians wider recognition and appreciation, explore social realities and issues of race and class in the DR, celebrate the genre through compelling music and dance footage and ultimately help build the bachata community worldwide

How You Can Help

In order to bring this project to fruition, I need to raise $40,000. Like music, independent documentary films have a way of reaching far corners of the world, forging unexpected connections and enriching the lives of people we may never meet.

Please consider helping to make this film a reality. Over $8,000 has been pledged to the project so far. Your contribution of any amount will make a real difference – ensuring that the film can be successfully produced and shared, fostering wider appreciation of Dominican culture, bachata music and dance, and the musicians who helped to create the genre.

In thanks for your contribution, you will also receive some great benefits! Check the contribution benefits list to see what you will receive for different levels of contribution. Thank you in advance for your partnership. Que viva la bachata!

All the best! Adam Taub
